Certified Doula (CD) through Doulas of North America (DONA)
Karen became interested in doula work when she realized that many of her pregnant friends were afraid of giving birth. Raised in a home where birth was considered an amazing, natural process, she realized that many expectant couples need more information and support than they receive through today’s standard channels. In 2003, Karen trained with Brenda Lane, a DONA approved Doula Trainer and a DONA certified doula. Karen is a certified birth doula through Doulas of North America (DONA).
Karen feels that women can give birth with confidence when they understand the birth process and the options available to them. She also believes that physical, emotional and informational support during this important time in a woman’s life can greatly increase her satisfaction with her birth experience and give her relationship with her new child the best possible start.
Some of her favorite things about being a doula include:
- Providing information to expectant couples to help them take charge of their care
- Witnessing the incredible strength that all women possess
- Seeing a contented newborn snuggle up and nurse for the first time
- Watching couples work through labor in their own unique ways
- The honor of being included in such a momentous family occasion
Two doulas attended the homebirth of Karen’s first child in 2006.
