Certified Doula (CD) through Doulas of North America (DONA)
Paula is a certified birth doula through Doulas of North America (DONA). Following the birth of her first daughter in 2000, Paula became interested in supporting women through pregnancy and labor, believing strongly in a woman’s natural ability to give birth. In September 2002, Paula attended a DONA birth doula training in Baltimore and has been assisting families ever since. Additionally, Paula’s training as a licensed clinical social worker, specializing in maternal and child health, helps her to empower women and couples to take control of their birth experiences.
Paula feels very strongly that every woman deserves to give birth in a fully supported environment. The birth of a child is not merely another life event, but a life-altering rite of passage for both parents. Paula enjoys building a warm and caring relationship with each birthing family
Some of her favorite things about being a doula include:
- getting to know not only the expectant parents, but also expectant siblings
- providing information and reassurance
- getting “creative” during births with the use of different comfort measure techniques
- playing with the birth ball
- having the great honor of holding newly born babies!
Paula is the mother of Jenna, Dahlia and Ian (all caught by midwives at the birth center and at home) and is married to the best "doula husband," Bob.
